Oct. 17: Plain speaking and red wine at Systemscope with special guest, Brian O’Grady

Thursday, October 17, 2013 – Systemscope Lounge, 61A York Street, 5:00 p.m.

If you understand the next sentence, you should attend Systemscope’s plain-language soirée:

The workshop is seen as an important initial step required as a precursor to subsequent efforts to develop possible options for consideration in proposing future work.

That’s from a real client document! But Brian O’Grady prefers plain language. As a professional communicator online, in print, and in person, Brian finds no substitute for clarity.

Join Brian at Systemscope for a light-hearted survey of how to grapple with plain language. You’ll hear from old friends like Pascal, Nielsen, and McGovern, and there’s wine too. Until then, take some advice from Brian’s Scottish friend Craig, “just speak normally!”

Brewster tells us, “Incomprehensible jargon is the hallmark of a profession.” As your expertise grows your ability to communicate diminishes. But you can fix it and demonstrate to others what communicators know intuitively, less is more.
